Sixty-four students training to be teachers were
arrested for examination malpractice and
convicted, even before completing their course.
No fewer than 64 teacher-in-training under the
Open Distance Learning Programme have been
convicted of examination malpractice charges in
Malawi.
Magistrate, Esther Phiri of the First Grade
Magistrate Court at Machinga Boma convicted the
accused and ordered them to pay Malawian
Kwatcha K15,000 (N5,356).
The court had found them guilty of entering the
examination with cell phones, an punishable
offence under the Malawi National Examination Act.
Magistrate Phiri said the students had a case to
answer having acted contrary to national
examination regulations which restrict entering the
examination room with mobile devices and other
items that can facilitate cheating.
Student Pulse gathered that the convicts were
arrested at Machinga Boma Teacher Development
Center on July 31.
Most of the students have paid the fines
