Your eyes meet across the room...bam,
instant attraction! But is the feeling mutual, should
you make your move? Don’t fear, the object of your
affection might be sending you secret clues. Here's
how to interpret the signs.
Body talk
You’ve heard the saying "first impressions last
long". It takes about four minutes for someone to
decide whether they’re into you or not. According to
author Tracey Cox, 55% of the impression we make
on other people depends on our body language, 38%
from the tone, speed and inflection of our voice and
only 7% from what we are actually saying.
Make a lasting impression by letting your body do
the talking. Confidence is an attractive thing and is
often expressed by large body gestures, such as
putting your hands behind your head, standing with
your feet apart and using your hands when you talk.
Scent of attraction
Have you heard about pheromones? They are
secreted by glands in the skin to trigger sensations
of attraction and excitement. The chemicals you
naturally give off indicate whether you’re a good
candidate for producing offspring or not.
According to researchers from Rice University all
socio-emotional meanings, including sexual ones,
are conveyed in human sweat. The study looked at
how brains of female volunteers processed and
encoded the smell of sexual sweat from men. It
found that several parts of the brain are involved in
processing the emotional value of what the smelt.
But just like beauty, smell is in the eyes (or, in this
case, nose) of the beholder. Another study found
that the male sweat chemicals – androstenone and
androstadienone illicit passion in some women.
The gaze of lust
Eye contact is a very powerful tool. Catching
someone’s eye is often the first step to making a
lasting impression.
A study found that people of the opposite sex who
exchanged a mutual gaze for two minutes reported
increased feelings of attraction for each other.
So when you walk past someone in the street and
you catch their eye, don't turn around as you walk
past each other. It makes you look a little
desperate. Make eye contact, look down, and then
turn around. Chances are the person might do the
same.
A rush of blood
Do your cheeks burn up when you look at or talk to
someone you like? Blushing is a clear indication
that you’re interested. It also indicates sexual
arousal.
A study found that people who blush are more
generous and trustworthy that those who don’t.
Researchers also found that blushers make better
romantic partners because those who are easily
embarrassed reported higher levels of faithfulness.
